Bill has been active in ophthalmological practice and training in urban, rural, indigenous and international settings for many years, as well as taking a keen interest in medical representation since the late 90s. His practice extends from Brisbane to central western Queensland and East Timor, where he is responsible for overseeing the St John Eye Services and education in Oecuzzi.
He is the past President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
He was AMA Queensland President (2001-2), Federal AMA President (2003-5), Chair of the Rural Telecommunications Review Committee (2007-9), Chair of Cancer Australia (2009-12), Chair of the Queensland Clinical Senate (2010-12) and Deputy Chair, Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) from 2007-8.
Bill served on the Northern Territory Emergency Response Taskforce in 2006/7 as Medical Advisor.
He is currently a Lt Colonel and Consultant Ophthalmologist to the Australian Armed Forces, and non-Executive Director, Medical Allied Professionals (MAP) Board, Brisbane.
In 2008 Bill was awarded an Order of Australia for his services to medicine in rural and remote Australia, to the eye health of indigenous people, and to professional medical organizations.
Bill is an active undergraduate and post graduate teacher and is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of Queensland School of Medicine.
